Despitethehnpactofhighly-activemltiretroviraltherapy(HAART),manifestedasmarkedreductionsintheincidenceofopwrtunistieinfectionsinthelast5,years,respiratoryproblemsstillconstituteamajorburdenofdiseaseinthoseinfectedwithHIV.ReasonsforthisincludethelimitedavailabilityofHAART.worldwide,thefailureofsustainedviralsuppressioninupto50%ofpatientstakingHAART,failureofprophylaxisforspecificopportunisticinfectiorrs,andanincreasingnumberofpatientspresentingwithpreviouslymldiagnosedadvancedHIVinfection.
