摘要 1TechnologyofnaturalmaterialsEarlymanusedconvenientlyshapedstonesastools."Workshop"areashavebeenfoundwithlargenumbersofstones,someshowingsignsofbeingworked[1].However,organicmaterialslikewoodwilldecayundernormalwetconditionsinthepresenceofoxygen,sowewon'tfindthesamesortofevidenceforwoodentools.Itissafetoassumethatearlymanusedsticksasprobesandclubs,andmaybeevenformakingsomesortofnestlikeprotectionagainsttheelementsandpredators,sinceweseechimpanzeesandotheranimalsdoingthissortofthing.Sowood,andalmostcertainlyotherplantmaterialssuchasfibrousleaves,andboneandothermaterialsgleanedfromdeadanimals,wouldbeusedfromtheearliesttimes.WeneedtoknowthisinordertoestablishtheideathatMancanbeexpectedtohavealonghistoryoftheuseandmanipulationofnaturalmaterials.Thisneedsskillsinchoosingmaterialsforcertainusesonthebasisoftheirmechanicalproperties,whetherthosepropertiesaretodowiththeeaseofshapingthematerialortheeffectivenessofthatmaterialinuse.Occasionallythematerialwaschosensimplybecauseitwasreadilyavailable.Ifwefindthataparticularmaterialwasalwaysusedforacertainjob,it'sreasonabletodeducethatManwasexertingmaterialsselectioncriteriathroughexperience.
