Chinaisthecountrywiththemostearthquakesandthemostserioushazardsfromcontinentalearthquakesintheworld.Duringthe1960sand1970s,aseriesofstrongearthquakesattackedthecitiesandcountiesinChinacausinggreatdamageandmanycasualties.ThemoststrikingonewastheTangshanearthquake(Ms7.8)inJuly1976,inwhichover240,000peoplediedandalargeindustrialcitywasleveled.Publicdemandforearthquakeforecastingsurgedafterthisdisaster.Fromthemid-1960s,systemicresearchonearthquakeforecastinghasevolvedthroughoutthecountry,InthispaperthemainadvancesinearthquakepredictionresearchinChinahavebeensummarized.
