NewChapteropensinthehistoryofSouthAfrica,anationbornanewwiththeburialoftheapartheidandtheeventualdemiseofthewhiteminorityracistregime.Overthirtymillionoppressedblacksfinallywontheirfreedomtobecomemastersofanewnationborninthefirsteverall-raceelectionheldlastApril.TheAfricanNationalCongress(ANC),withyearsofanti-apartheidrecord,won252seatsintheelectiontothe400-seatNationalAssemblytocomeoutasthelargestpartyofthecountry,followedbytheoriginalrulingNationalParty(NP)with82seats,theInkathaFreedomParty(IFP)with43seatsandotherswith23seats.ANCPresident,world-famousblackleaderNelsonMandela,waselectedasthefirstblackStatePresidentandtheorganization’sNationalChairmanThaboMbekiasFirstDeputyPresident.F.W.deKlerk,formerStatePresidentandleaderoftheNationalPartyremainedinthenewgovernmentastheSecondDeputyPresident.AnANC-ledgovernmentofnationalunitywasinauguratedandsworninonMay10.
